“I cannot shield you from the challenges you will face. You will know great loss and danger, but also great joy. You may doubt your instincts in the years to come, but your feet have been walking this path since the moment you were born.”
― Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches
Pu-erh tea, pronounced “poo-air, comes from deep within the mountains of the Yunnan Province in China and made from the leaf and buds of tea trees that are located in vast ancient forests. This tea dates back to the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was commonly traded for horses. Pu-erh teas are aged and naturally fermented, sometimes for 50 years or more and stored in compressed bricks or tea cakes. However, lucky for you, Pu-erh tea is also available in a loose leaf. One of the most oxidized of all teas, it only gets better with time. Every 8-ounce cup of Pu-erh tea contains about 70 milligrams of caffeine. Pu-erh tea not only increases energy with all of this caffeine, but it also helps produce lovastatin (used to treat high cholesterol), delivers increased levels of oxygen, and provides high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C due to its fermentation.
Much like the story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont, this tea Pu-erh Black Tea blend is complicated, hot, and full of power. As you sit in your library sipping a cup of this dark and enchanting liquor, you can almost feel the magic of Ashmole 782 buzzing through your fingertips. Or is that a firedrake watching you? Either way, you are destined to enjoy the enticing flavors weaved throughout this tea blend. Give it a try with just a little bit of sugar and unlock the key to your new favorite tea!

The thoughts that went through my head when sipping this were: Delicious, Smooth, Harmony, and Balance, with scrumptious undertones of Papaya.
I enjoyed the earthiness of puerh with the papya. I think pistachio was an interesting twist.
So, my friend actually bought this tea for me originally. I loved it so much, I ordered more of it. And my brother decided to try some and he loves it as well!!! I'll have to order more now!
This tea is absolutely delicious with it's sweet, nutty and mellow flavor. I really like that it doesn't have an astringent after bite like so many black teas do. It also has a lot of caffeine! The first time I brewed it, I got it too strong and it made me shaky. Luckily all it took was a small brewing adjustment, to brewing time and quantity of tea leaves, to sort the problem out and now I can just sit back and enjoy this wonderful tea. A taste to be savored while rereading A Discovery of Witches!
I cannot overstate my love for this tea. It’s savory roasty elements play SO perfectly with the nutty warmth; it is like comfort in a cup. I love it the way I love a milk oolong - you may hear puerh and have a notion of the taste already, but in the same way a milk oolong is neither earthy nor evoking the sea, Alchemy and Destiny uses that full body and instead makes something soothing and satisfying in equal measure.
This would pair well with tea biscuits, snickerdoodles, pound cake, and butter cookies; something mild, not too rich or heavy, but a bit indulgent. For healthier snack pairings, try banana or roasted pecans.
